The Top 50 Movies: That make you say "WTF?!"

The first list, of my soon to be big series of movie lists, is: The Top 50 Movies; that make you say "WTF?!"

There are some movies that make our eyes widen, our mouths drop and our brains pretty well explode inside our skulls. This list will count down the best of; the gory, the twists, the shockers, the weird and the just plain screwed up.

  

#50 Leviathan (1989)

Plot Summary: Underwater deep-sea miners encounter a Soviet wreck and bring back a dangerous cargo to their base on the ocean floor with horrifying results. In a story owing a lot to _Alien_ and _The Thing_, the crew of the mining base must fight to survive against a genetic mutation that hunts them down one by one.

#49 eXistenZ (1999)

Plot Summary: A game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.

#48 Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Plot Summary: A recently laid off factory worker kidnaps his former boss' daughter, hoping to use the ransom money to pay for his sister's kidney transplant.

Plot Summary: A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.

Plot Summary: An action epic that explores the origins of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force (better known as Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad,) who somehow become pitted in a battle over an immortal piece of exercise equipment.

 #45 Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

 Plot Summary: Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town. 

 #44 Haywire (2012)

Plot Summary: A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission. 

 #43 Scanners (1981)

Plot Summary: A scientist sends a man with extraordinary psychic powers to hunt others like him. 

  
#41 Tokyo Gore Police (2008)

Plot Summary: Set in a future-world vision of Tokyo where the police have been privatized and bitter self-mutilation is so casual that advertising is often specially geared to the "cutter" demographic, this is the story of samurai-sword-wielding Ruka and her mission to avenge her father's assassination. Ruka is a cop from a squad who's mission is to destroy homicidal mutant humans known as "engineers" possessing the ability to transform any injury to a weapon in and of itself.

#40 Freddy Got Fingered (2001)

Plot Summary: An unemployed cartoonist moves back in with his parents and younger brother Freddy. When his parents demand he leave, he begins to spread rumors that his father is sexually abusing Freddy.

#39 Martyrs (2008)

Plot Summary: A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

#38 Teeth (2007)

Plot Summary: Still a stranger to her own body, a high school student discovers she has a physical advantage when she becomes the object of male violence.

#37 Pandorum (2009)

Plot Summary: A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.

#36 The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)

Plot Summary: A mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a new "pet"-- a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums.

#35 Wild at Heart (1990)

Plot Summary: Young lovers Sailor and Lula run from the variety of weirdos that Lula's mom has hired to kill Sailor.

#34 Audition (1999)

Plot Summary: A widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.

#33 Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior (2003)

Plot Summary: When the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen, a young martial artist goes to the big city and finds himself taking on the underworld to retrieve it.

#32 Primer (2004)

Plot Summary:Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

#31 The Machine Girl (2008)

Plot Summary: Ami is a typical college girl. She's bright, friendly, popular and athletic, with nothing to set her apart from other girls her age other than the fact that she is an orphan, left to care for her younger brother after her father committed suicide after being falsely accused of murder. But while there is tragedy in their past, the siblings' future looks good, except for one thing. Ami's brother has racked up a considerable debt to another boy at school, and that boy just happens to be the heir to a clan of vicious ninja-yakuza. Ami's brother can't pay, violence breaks out and in the course of trying to avenge her brother, Ami is captured by the clan. They torture her and hack her arm right off. Ami escapes, barely alive, and is taken in by the owners of a machine shop who build her a customized, bullet-spewing arm. From that point, the quest for revenge is on in earnest.

Plot Summary: After finding a severed human ear in a field, a young man soon discovers a sinister underworld lying just beneath his idyllic suburban home town.

Plot Summary: Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy.

#28 Hard Candy (2005)

Plot Summary: A mature 14-year old girl meets a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. Suspecting that he is a pedophile, she goes to his home in an attempt to expose him.

#27 Mulholland Dr. (2001)

Plot Summary: After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesic, she and a perky Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.

#26 Dead Alive (1992)

Plot Summary: A young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors.

#25 The Protector (2005)

Plot Summary: A young fighter named Kham must go to Australia to retrieve his stolen elephant. With the help of a Thai-born Australian detective, Kham must take on all comers, including a gang led by an evil woman and her two deadly bodyguards.

#24 Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

Plot Summary: After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.

#23 Seven (1995)

Plot Summary: Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

#22 Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

Plot Summary: In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

#21 Splice (2009)

Plot Summary: Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals for medical use.

#20 MacGruber (2010)

Plot Summary: Ex-special operative MacGruber is called back into action to take down his archenemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who's in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C.

 

#19 Naked Lunch (1991)

Plot Summary: After developing an addiction to the substance he uses to kill bugs, an exterminator accidentally murders his wife and becomes involved in a secret government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in an Islamic port town in Africa.

 

#18 Story of Ricky (1991)

 Plot Summary:A young man with superhuman strength is incarcerated at a prison run by corrupt officials and seeks to use his martial arts to clean up the system.

 #17 Buried (2010)

 

Plot Summary:  Paul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

Plot Summary: A British soldier is kidnapped by IRA terrorists. He befriends one of his captors, who is drawn into the soldier's world.

Plot Summary: A sleazy cable-TV programmer begins to see his life and the future of media spin out of control in a very unusual fashion when he acquires a new kind of programming for his station.

 #13 Dreamcatcher (2003)

Plot Summary: Friends on a camping trip discover that the town they're vacationing in, is being plagued in an unusual fashion by parasitic aliens from outer space.

Plot Summary: When his pregnant fiancee becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge. 

#11 The Thing (1982)

Plot Summary: Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. 

 #10 Saw (2004)

Plot Summary: With a dead body laying between them, two men wake up in the secure lair of a serial killer who's been nicknamed "Jigsaw". The men must follow various rules and objectives if they wish to survive and win the deadly game set for them.

#9 Lost Highway (1997) 

 Plot Summary: After a bizarre encounter at a party, a jazz saxophonist is framed for the murder of his wife and sent to prison, where he inexplicably morphs into a young mechanic and begins leading a new life.

#8 Insidious (2010)

Plot Summary: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. 

#7 Saw 4 (2007)

Plot Summary: Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Now, upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm and Agent Perez, arrive in the terrified community to assist the veteran Detective Hoffman in sifting through Jigsaw's latest grisly remains and piecing together the puzzle.  Plot Summary: A freak storm unleashes a species of blood-thirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.
