Grandma: "Who would want to rape me?"........Hesher: "Fucked if I know."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is slowly becoming one of the biggest actors in the movie bizz. His comeback started in movies like The Lookout and 500 Days of Summer. Then he started doing even bigger movies and even bogger roles, in films like Inception, 50/50 and this summers Looper and The Dark Knight Rises. A movie that flew under most peoples radar, that has become a hit among movie buffs is Hesher.
Hesher is about a boy named TJ (Devin Brochu), who has recently lost his mother in a car accident. It is hard for him to cope with life, and also hard for his dad, Paul (Rainn Wilson), who can't seem to get off the couch. They both live in TJ's grandma's house, who is played by Piper Laurie. On his way to school one day TJ has a run in with a squatter, who's name is Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). After their meeting, Hesher begins to follow TJ around and get him into trouble. Then all of sudden Hesher shows up in TJ's house and asks to use the laundry room. TJ asks him to leave, but Hesher chokes TJ and tells him to go along with it. Hesher begins living at the house and no one says much or does much about it.
Another problem of TJ's is a bully at school. Luckily, before TJ is about to be beaten up, a women named Nicole (Natalie Portman) comes to his aid. TJ begins to like Nicole, and follows her around and watches her at work. Hesher notices this and thinks he can make some fun out of it. The three of them have a strange hangout day in somebodies backyard. TJ and Nicole both notice that Hesher is a weird, but funny guy. One day Hesher finds grandma, dead, in her bedroom and then later that day TJ finds Nicole and Hesher in bed together. He snaps on both of them and runs away. He goes after the bully that's been picking on him and then goes to the junkyard, where his mom's car was taken. When he gets home the next morning him and his dad have to go to his Grandma's funeral. During the funeral, Hesher shows up and makes a speech about his left nut. From this speech Paul and TJ realize, why they can't seem to get their lives back in order. Hesher ends up being a blessing in disguise.
Before I had bought this movie, I had seen the trailer and had heard so many good things about it. I found it in the five dollar bin, some how, and knew I had to get it. I was glad I made that decision. It turned out to be a funny, dramatic and touching film. Hesher is one of, if not the best, role Joseph Gordon-Levitt has done so far in his career. The way his character acts, makes you think that Levitt acts like this on a regular basis. Pretty much every one, of the main characters in this film, did a fine job in their roles. From Rainn Wilson to Natalie Portman to Piper Laurie and the young even Devin Brochu. This movie has the right amount of comedy in between the right amount of drama. Also, the metaphors this movie uses are easy to understand and are presented in strange, but beautiful ways. Hesher is a great indie film for anyone who loves a great and enjoying watch.
The Dvd has Levitt, Wilson and Portman pictured on the front and the "Hesher" title is spelled out using Metallica font. (which I thought was cool. It also has a lot of great reviews, on the front and back. "HILARIOUS!," says Eric Vespe from Ain't It Cool News; "Refreshingly original," says Kyle Smith from the New York Post; " Raw destruction and aggro comedy punctuated with a blast of crunching metal," says Amy Nicholson from Boxoffice Magazine and "4 stars. Headbangs straight into your heart!," says Grae Drake from movies.com.
Hesher was released in 2010 and directed by Spencer Susser. Released by Alliance Films, Corner Store Entertainment, Lionsgate and The Last Picture Company.
